As we all expect at this time every year, the new iPhones have arrived and again we get two new phones in 2015, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.
Both of the models features significant upgrades like 3D Touch, 12MP iSight camera, 4K video recording, faster CPU and GPU performance. The phones were launched with the 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage options but the 16GB and 64GB were discontinued and replaced by the 32GB option since 2016. You must be excited about the launch and want to get hands on the phone as soon as possible. However, you should be careful because your new iPhone might not be compatible with your carrier.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus come in 8 models, including A1633, A1634, A1687, A1688, A1699, A1700, A1690, and A1691, and they have different cellular connectivity. Fortunately, the number of model numbers is the same as iPhone 6 last year and Apple also covers 3 more LTE bands (23 as compared to 20 bands on iPhone 6). If you are on T-Mobile, you will see a boost in LTE signal, especially when you are inside buildings, because all new models include support for LTE band 12 (700MHz spectrum). AT&T customers will also notice a better experience as some models support the new LTE band 30. The new generation also features LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) which supports download speed of 300Mbps and Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE).
Now, let’s take a look at the different model numbers.

What’s the model that work well in china?
China has three carrier: China Unicom, China mobile and Telecom.

I have a question on the T-mobile based on the post. How is it the T-mobile model is locked and contract free? Isn’t supposed to be where if you buy contract free and outright that it should be unlocked out of the box? Also with the iPhone UP, you are getting an unlocked phone so technically it should be unlcoked isn’t it?
JamesD says
Looking at the Apple site, it says the A1633 supports CDMA bands (in addition to GSM and the entire spectrum of LTE bands). Does this mean that the A1633 model will work with Verizon as well as AT&T?
David says
I pre ordered two new iPhone 6s plus, I am going to be using the installment plan from Apple. When Apple asked me what carrier I have I said AT&T on my 128GB AND For my 64GB I said I have T-Mobile. So when I pick up the phone on the 25th are they going to give me 2 different iPhone model? Would I get the A1634 for my att phone and A1687 for my “T-Mobile”? Or all the model for the installment plan from att will be the same with the a1687?

As I live in China, i will get the i6s there… when i compare models A1700/A1699 with A1688/A1687 i see that they support exactly the same bands. As i will be moving back to the EU at the end of the next year (and i travel regularly to Europe), i wonder… will it also work 4G in the EU? What could be a difference if all the bands are the same… do Chinese put an “extra” security hole on it or what? Will a Chinese model be blocked in the EU?
Last year iphone 6 sold in China Apple store was completely the same model as the one sold in the EU (except, the model sold in China Mobile). This year there is difference. For example my “old” i5s from the EU has working LTE on some Chinese networks, though it doesn’t work on China Mobile.
Tuan Do says
Apple China stated that the iPhone 6S can be used in a foreign country as long as it doesn’t come with a contract. Those models should work fine in Europe. It seems like they won’t block some 3G and 4G bands like last year.
deep says
so i can buy Tmobile contract free iphone 6s plus and use it in India with band 40 as Lte?
RR says
I wonder what Apple’s rationale is for making basically the same U.S. model, where one has LTE band 30 and one does not? (Why not make them all LTE band 30 capable?)
I am left to assume that the model that has LTE band 30 will be locked by AT&T. But I suppose I will
find out as we learn more information.
KK says
I order a 6s plus (A1687) at a full price($749) thru apple.com and chose T-Mobile as the carrier since I am living in the U.S. Is it possible to use without unlock from T-Mobile or Apple store when I travel to China. Or I still need to unlock the phone before visiting China?? I don’t have an account with T-Mobile and I prefer to use it as a contract-free travel phone.
Thank you!
Tuan Do says
You’re all set with that T-Mobile iPhone. It is fully compatible with carriers in China.
Berto says
Is the ATT version the overall best version to purchase having the additional Band 30? Issue is I’m undecided on carrier and would like both Band 30 and Band 12 in the event I go with ATT or T-Mobile?
Berto says
T-Mobile has Band 12
AT&T has Band 12 and Band 30 correct?
I am undecided on carrier but would like to future proof, does that mean AT&T version is the better of the two?

I get back to Colombia on 9.27, so I will not be able to stay there waiting for an unlocking process. Do you know what model comes unlocked directly out off the box?
Thank you!

Si sabes que puedo hacer me cuentas pero te recomiendo que no compres el cel hasta no tener eso claro.

Can anyone confirm the Model A1688 (Sprint) will work fine if inserted GSM card to use it in Dubai? the bands are the same with the 2 carriers here in Dubai, I just need a conformation if the Sprint version comes unlocked out of the box for GSM use?

No it won’t work. You can buy any other version, except the Sprint iPhone 6S, because it is locked to the carrier.

If I get Iphone 6S Plus from T-Mobile, will it work with H2O LTE, i need this faster speed. Which model and bands that gives it H2O LTE… Thanks.

It should work with H2O LTE as AT&T is the host of the carrier. I’m not sure if H2O will have the LTE band 30.

Hello,
I read in this post that you said that i buy an iPhone 6S from t-mobile it will be contract free but it will be locked for T-Mobile.
Now i’m reading the comments and i see some answers that T-Mobile is unlocked?
I had contacted many time apple these weeks and they keep telling me that all the iPhones that are in pre-order right now are locked for each carrier, the only option to get an unlocked iPhone is to get the upgrade program.
I was thinking on purchasing the device from T-Mobile at full price and ship it to Central America, where i live, and use it with my local carrier, but apple keeps telling me that the iphone is going to be locked for T-Mobile and i cannot use it, Plus the iPhone 6S from T-Mobile is not activated straight out of the box, that i should go to the apple store or a t-mobile store and set up an account with them.
Can you clarify?
Thanks
Berzerker says
Sprint and AT&T phones are locked to their carriers. All Verizon LTE phones are factory GSM and LTE unlocked, so buying that one would be fine (a Verizon account is required to get one, right now, though). The T-Mobile phone comes unlocked until you insert a T-Mobile SIM, then it locks, but can be unlocked after 45 days of service.
Andre says
Gosh there is so such conflicting information on here, I would simply like to know which model I need to purchase so I can use these carriers.. Verizon, At&t and T-mobile.

Is there official documentation anywhere stating that the A1688/A1687 models are the only ones eligible for the iPhone Upgrade Program?

Unfortunately there is no official documentation, that’s what Apple told me. I will be able to confirm when I get hands on those new iPhones.
David says
Can you confirm this now?
David says
Can you confirm this now? Is my ATT iPhone upgrade program going to be these model number too?
Edwin G says
Theorectically if one purchases an A1634 unlocked (say, from Australia) then that can be considered the world phone (not the 1687) since it support LTE 30 and has CDMA capabilities if you want to switch to Verizon from ATT?

I just purchased the A1633. I paid cash for it and was told by the apple expert that did the sale, that it would be unlocked as soon as she completed the transaction. She made me confirm that I am with a carrier. (I can’t remember if she made me confirm that I indeed with AT&T, but that did come up, I think she was just making sure I was with one of the big 4. ) She didn’t appear to actually check anything on my AT&T account, nor did she activate the phone. I have not done the iTunes setup yet to see if it will inform me that my phone is unlocked.
RR says
iTunes did indeed confirm that the new A1633 is unlocked, after I transferred my SIM card and plugged into iTunes, for me. (See my earlier post from September 25th 11:17 AM EDT)

Awesome, thanks a lot for your confirmation.
Did you pay full price for the A1633?
RR says
Yes. I paid full price.
Jery says
Hi, how did you activate it through iTunes? I’ve read a couple of other posts (from other sites) that say don’t remove SIM while activating through to iTunes. I’m interested in purchasing the AT&T model (A1634, 6s Plus) and pay full price to use with T-mobile in the U.S. and abroad. Thanks

I took the new phone out of the box and before doing anything else, I transferred my SIM card from my previous phone to the iPhone 6S. After that I turned on the phone (I believe it booted to the “Hello” screen) and plugged it into iTunes. I chose the option which was NOT “setup as a new phone” but rather something to the effect of restore from a previous backup, and did so.

it worked! I purchased model A1634 (6s Plus) and was able to use it with T-Mobile

Do the A1633 and A1634 come already unlocked? If so what is the advantage of buying an A1687/88? If not how easy is it toget the A1633/34 unlocked?
Lawk Camril says
Yes, the phones come unlocked. I recently bought one from ATT.

Hi,
I’m from Portugal and I’m gonna travel through Japan and Hong Kong in the next weeks. I am thinking about buying an iphone 6s. Since they have model A1688 for sale, and since this is the same model for France and Germany, comparing to previous models (6, 5s, 5) it seems obvious that this will be the model for Portugal.
If this is the right model and if I buy it unlocked, are there any other issue (besides the warranty)?
Refering to the warranty issue, is it common for the iphone to have any fault/problem? Honestly I don’t know anybody that has ever needed to activate the warranty (I’ve never heard of an iphone with any defect).
