This is a special year for Apple since they released 3 iPhone versions to celebrate the 10-year anniversary. Apart from the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, we also have the iPhone X with some radical changes and said to be the future of smartphone.
However, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are still attractive options since the iPhone X is out of budget of most average consumers. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus has a similar design as the previous iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. You can only distinguish between the 2 generations by looking at the back; Apple has replaced an all-aluminum body with a glass back cover. The change in materials doesn’t affect its water and dust resistance, moreover, it enables the wireless charging feature on iPhone for the first time.
In terms of hardware, iPhone 8 has the same LED-backlit IPS LCD displays, 12MP camera sensors, and a home button with Touch ID. Some major upgrades include the new A11 Bionic processor and wired fast charging (50% charge in 30 minutes). It originally came with just the 64GB and 256GB storage option, however, Apple discontinued the 256GB version and replaced with 128GB version in September 2019.
Buy Factory-Unlocked iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on Amazon
Similar to previous years, the iPhone 8 versions will come in some different model numbers. Specifically, we have the iPhone 8 A1863, A1905, and 1906, and the iPhone 8 Plus A1864, A1897, and A1898. Apple uses modem chips from different manufacturers (Intel and Qualcomm), so some iPhone models won’t support CDMA networks; you should check the supported networks below carefully before ordering the new phone. Now, let’s check out all the differences.

does the new A11 Bionic processor integrates a gigabit LTE modem? — the A10 doesn’t include any LTE modem
Tuan Do says
No, the A11 Bionic doesn’t have a built-in LTE modem, and the Gigabit LTE of Qualcomm’s modem is even disabled.

Is T-mobile’s iPhone is locked?
And I’ll use in Korea at SK Telecom.
T-mobile & SK Telecom is compatible?
Thanks!
Tuan Do says
Yes, they are compatible but you need to buy an unlocked phone from Apple Store. The T-Mobile version on Apple Store is unlocked.
Sam says
Apple Store is here? apple.com
Thank you very much!
Tuan Do says
Yes, you can buy it online or at a physical Apple Store.
Lars says
Will my sim free A1863 work in Belgium with a belgian simcard( base network)?
Tuan Do says
Sure, it is perfect.
Eric says
I don’t understand why anyone would get any iPhone 8 (not plus) other than the A1906. It has a superset of the other model’s frequencies. What am I missing?
Tuan Do says
Sometimes, they don’t have a choice. An average consumer wouldn’t know there are different iPhone 8 models, they thought all are the same. Besides, you can’t tell the difference when using them on GSM networks.
Tristan Brown says
I am trying to understand precisely the differences you reference.
Prabir says
If I buy an unlocked iPhone 8 (model A1863) or iPhone 8 Plus (Model A1864) from Apple Website, will they work with ATT or Tmobile? I don’t see they are listed here.
Also will those model will work in India?
Tuan Do says
Sure, they will work on AT&T and T-Mobile. The table above shows the iPhone models that those carriers are selling. All of them are great for India.
Prabir says
Thanks for your reply, so that means it’s better to by an unlocked version and then use it with any carrier like AT&T and T-Mobile including CDMA network with Verizon and Sprint.
Martin Tavander says
So if I understand it correctly I can buy an Iphone in Japan (a1906) and use it in Sweden with my swedish sim card?

Raymond says
Hi,
I’m based in US and current using ATT as carrier. And frequent travel to Hong Kong, China, Taiwan.
My current i-phone 6 is from ATT which not able to use China LTE band, no matter roaming or insert the local SIM
If I buy the iphone 8 plus at ATT retail shop which means I will suffer the same problem as the model will be A1897.
So I need to buy iphone from the Apple store with sim-free version, which their phone will be A1864
Tuan Do says
Hi Raymond,
The situation is different now, all of the models are compatible with 4G networks in China now. You should buy from Apple Store since it’s unlocked.
Luis says

The back cover of iPhone 8 does not specify the model number as iPhone 7 and 7 Plus does. Where can I find the model number of iPhone 8 plus?
Tuan Do says
You can find it on the box.
tarkan says
Hi ,
what about the lte modems ? are they the same like in 7 and 7 plus ? because the a1784 has intel modem (xmm7360) with speed and connection problems.Meanwile a1660-a1661 used the qualcom MDM9645M which performed much better. So what is the situation now with 8 and 8 plus ?
Tuan Do says
Apple upgraded LTE modems but the situation is the same, you can check out this post https://www.techwalls.com/iphone-x-a1865-qualcomm-a1901-intel-modem/

Hey, thanks for your reports. If I will buy a iPhone 8, model A1863 will it work in Germany as perfect as anything else? Because another model is recommended for Germany. Thanks for your help!
Tuan Do says
It’s perfect as long as you buy an unlocked phone.
JVu says
If I buy an unlocked iPhone 8 Plus off of Apple’s website, what model will it be? Also, the cellular service I use, called Consumer Cellular, uses towers from both AT&T and T-Mobile, and they sell a sim card that requires the phone to be an unlocked GSM phone. Will the iPhone I buy off of Apple’s website work with it?
Tuan Do says
Absolutely, just buy the sim-free A1864.
John Caruso says
Hey the part number MQ8D2LL/A is the same for both the Verizon, Sprint, Unlocked 8+ and the AT&T 8+. Online I can only find the part number so are they both the same and compatible with GSM/CDMA? Is the T-Mobile one the only 8+ not compatible with CDMA?
Tuan Do says
No, they have different part numbers. I’ve just updated the post, please check again.
Gabriel Lopes says

No, don’t buy it at Best Buy. You should buy it directly from Apple Store, it’s unlocked and works well in Brazil.

This means, Did the “A1906” iPhone 8 used the Qualcomm’s modem? I think that International Model(A1905) will use the Intel’s modem, also Other country’s model will use Qualcomm’s modem

I am currently with T-Mobile and am looking to upgrade to an iPhone 8+. However, I want to make sure the phone will work when I travel home to Australia next year. I would prefer to buy from T-Mobile as I can get a significant discount on the plan I am on, but I am concerned about the compatibility of the A1897 model in Australia (Apple website only list the Australian carriers under the A1864 model). The only difference I can see on the Apple website is that the A1864 model offers CDMA as well (GSM seems to be the same as the A1897 model).
So, my question is whether the A1897 model (iPhone 8 Plus) will work on the Australian networks?
Tuan Do says
Yes, the T-Mobile version will work on GSM networks in Australia. However, people still prefer the A1864 since it has a better modem chip. I had a guide for iPhone X and it’s applicable for iPhone 8/8 Plus https://www.techwalls.com/iphone-x-a1865-qualcomm-a1901-intel-modem/
Lee says
Why does the Japanese version of iPhone A1906 and A1898 offer more cellular bands? Does that mean it’s more versatile for travelers? I know that they sell unlocked (sim free) versions at their Apple Store, and based on the specs, it seems like a more viable option for people currently touring in Japan. It’s being sold here for 89,800 yen, which converts to 798 USD…. plus it seems you get a tax exempt if you bring your passport.
Will this phone be a better option than the US sim free version for heavy international travelers???
Tuan Do says
You won’t benefit from the extra bands in other countries since those extra bands are used in Japan only. Also notice that the A1906 and A1898 has a mandatory shutter noise when taking photos.
Lee says
Wow that was a huge red flag that I completely missed… I almost bought an iPhone here in Japan and would have regretted every time when taking photos… Thanks for the heads up!!
Yavuz says
Unfortunately i bought a1898 from japan since i dont know this. How about LTE? I want to use this phone in Turkey and i wonder if LTE will work properly??

Hi, I recently purchased an Iphone 8 Sim Free version at the apple store ( model A1863), but I don’t understand, on the apple website it seems there is a A1863 GSM and a A1863CDMA, so which model did I get ?
And moreover I will go back to France with this phone, so will I be able to have 4G even if I have the CDMA model ?
Tuan Do says
No worries, the A1863 is compatible with both GSM and CDMA, so you can use it in France.

Hello, I was just wondering. I won a contest (first time ever!) but couldnt tell if it was unlocked or not. I am waiting to receive it but in the meantime they sent me the model A1864. I was a little confused but maybe you can help. Does that mean that I cant use it with Tmobile…even if its the unlocked version? Thank you for your help!

can you tell model A1864 ít Gsm or CDMA and can work in Vietnam . I buy from apple unlock
Tuan Do says
Yes, it works great in Vietnam.

remy says
i bought a A1864 and its locked to verizon , this list is off
Tuan Do says
All Verizon phones are unlocked, why do you say it’s locked?
Carlos says
I did too and I called Verizon and they told me that that model was specifically made for Verizon only and that it’s not compatible with any other carrier.
Tuan Do says
They made some changes recently to prevent theft. Now Verizon phones are locked as well, we can only buy unlocked phones at Apple Store.
Imran says
I have recently purchsed a apple iphone 8 plus A1864 to use on gsm network in pakistan, will it work in pakistan?
Espen says
Please confirm if i´m understanding this correctly. The A1864 has built in both GSM and CDMA on all the phones with that model number, and will work the best anywhere in the world, while the A1905 only has GSM, and will only work with GSM carriers?
thanks
