New generation of iPhone has been officially available and it comes in two versions this time, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apart from considering between a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch iPhone, consumers also have to deal with choosing among different models, including A1549, A1586, A1589, A1522, A1524 and A1593.
I see a lot of people buy iPhone 6 in the U.S. or on eBay with global shipping but many of those phones couldn’t work in their countries because there are some iPhone models manufactured for different wireless carriers and markets. They have almost the same tech specs but there are some differences in cellular connectivity. The situation is much better this year as the new iPhone 6/6 Plus features new VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology, which means you can buy a GSM version and still can use a full range of services on CDMA networks. For example, you can buy a sim-free T-Mobile phone and completely avoid CDMA to use it on Verizon. Some carriers offering VoLTE are T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon in the US; Hutchinson Telecom (3), CSL and SmarTone in Hong Kong; SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ in South Korea and StarHub in Singapore.

As VoLTE hasn’t become popular worldwide yet, I’d recommend you to check carefully so that you can purchase the most compatible one. The model numbers of iPhones can easily be found on the box or on the back cover. The amount of iPhone 6’s model numbers is less than iPhone 5S’, then it is much easier for us to pick the right one. So, what are the differences between those iPhone models? Let’s check them out.

A and Rev. B (800, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz), GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz) and TD-SCDMA 1900 (F), 2000 (A). Basically, the A1522 (GSM) bands are the same as iPhone A1549 (GSM), A1522 (CDMA)’s bands are the same as A1549 (CDMA), A1593 is the same as A1589 and A1524 is corresponding to the A1586. Details are shown below.
1. A1522 (GSM): This is the popular iPhone 6 Plus version that can work properly on most GSM carriers over the world, including United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Its compatible bands are GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz) and LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29).

Hi there, after reading all this forum, still in doubt…
I’m right now in Canada and I would like to buy from Apple Store, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus for me and my wife. But we are from Europe (Czech Republic) and have SIM cards from O2 and Vodafone CZ. As I understand from above, I don’t have a choice when buying phone from iStore, right? So do you think the version we will get will work in Czech with H+ and LTE network without problems?
Thanks for advice and have good day.

Hi Tuan,
I m a bit confused.
I have just ordered an iPhone 6 A1586 on Japan Apple Store to use in France. The japanese website, unlike UK Apple Store website, doesn’t mention whether it’s an A1586 GSM or A1586 CDMA model.
And on the other hand, according to some forums, A1586 GSM and CDMA models are both identical model.
Is it right?
If not, from your experience, the iPhone i ordered is the GSM or CDMA model?
Thank you

Hi Tuan,
I am currently living in China and I am going back to France for a short holiday. I am planning to buy the Iphone 6 in France; do you know which model would be compatible with the Chinese operators (Unicom, China Mobile) in China ? Thanks a lof for your answer, and great blog !
Paolo says
Dear Tuan.
I live and work between Hong Kong, China, Italy, usa and Canada.
I have purchased a iphone 6+ in Hong Kong’s apple store and I am using it happily both in Hong Kong and China. In Hong Kong I use a Csl card enjoying very ultra fast 4G. In China I insert my China Unicom card and it shows 4G too, though at much slower speeds. Anyway I am happy about it.
The iphone 6+ shows, on the back, model 1524, but no mention if it is 1524 CDMA or 1524 GSM…
My questions are:
– How can I tell if it is cdma1524 or gsm1524?
– why my iphone 6 works under 4G with China Unicom and with China Mobile sim cards but NOT with a China Telecom sim? As far as I know the 3 carriers are using TDD LTE now. (China Unicom will implement fdd lte in late 2015, but now they are forced to share the tdd network as far as I was told…)
– under Settings/about I see: Model: MGAC2ZP/A (HONG KONG model)
The Chinese iphone 6+ in the market displays: MODEL: xxxxCH/A
– why the unlocked iphone 6+ sold in apple store in China can work in LTE mode with all 3 Chinese carriers and my cannot work with China Telecom? The iphone 6+ sold in apple store in Beijing and Shanghai also shows as 1524…
– If I buy a Chinese iphone 6+ for my wife will it work in LTE mode in Canada (Rogers)? In Italy (TIM and Vodafone) and in USA (T-Mobile)?
– My Hong Kong iphone 6+ will work in LTE mode in Canada (Rogers)? In Italy (TIM and Vodafone) and in USA (T-Mobile)?
Thank you Bei much!
Paolo
Paolo says
Dear Tuan
I am very grateful to you for your useful info.
I have puchased a 128GB iPhone 6+ in Hong Kong’s Apple store, (model MGAC2ZP/A) and it works perfectly with my Hong Kong carrier (CSL) in super fast 4G mode. On the back cover I see: model: 1524…but no mention whether it is CDMA or GSM.
When I come to China (I work and live between Hong Kong, China, Italy, USA and Canada), I use my China Unicom card and it works rather well in 4G mode, though with slower speeds (probably because it links to TDD network of China Unicom).
I have tried with a 4G China Mobile SIM card and it shows the same LTE speeds as with China Unicom SIM card.
My iPhone 6+ cannot work with the 3rd provider, China Telecom, although China Telecom also uses TDD LTE as the previous two carries. No way to make it work with CT.
Although already awarded, currently there is NO FDD network in China: China Unicom has been obliged to use home-grown, China Mobile supported, TDD LTE and will deploy FDD LTE network only in late 2015 or 2016, if China government will allow it :).
I was told so by many service support customer care people in China Unicom
Here my questions:
1. Is my Hong Kong iPhone 6+ a CDMA 1524? Or a GSM 1524? How can I tell?
2. Why a Chinese iPhone6+ can work on the 3 carriers (including China Telecom)? The chinese model, iPhone 6+, shows, in the settings/about: model xxxxCH/A instead of ZP/A.
The chinese iPhone 6+ is 1524 as mine (one can see the label 1524 the back cover).
3. If I buy a iPhone 6+ in China (Apple store), (a 1524 model), will it work in LTE mode in:
– Italy (TIM, Vodafone)? Italy seems using FDD LTE
– USA (T-Mobile or Verizon or Att)?
– Canada (Rogers)?
4.
I haven’t yet tested my Hong Kong’s iPhone 6+ in USA and Canada and Italy: will it work in LTE mode in the above 3 countries with the above carriers?
Thank you so much!
Paolo

I want to buy an Iphone in India and use it in Europe (The Netherlands). Can someone tell me which Iphone to buy which makes it possible to use in Europe?

Hello Tuan,
I live in the USA, have t-mobile service, and currently a 1549 tmobile unlocked iPhone 6. I travel to China, and spend 4-8 weeks at a time there 2 times per year. I just returned and could only get Edge data on China Mobile roaming, and occasionally 3g (i think on china unicom?). I know I need model 1524 (want the 6 plus). If and when this model is available in the US market, unlocked so I can use my t-mobile sim, will this work the same as a 1549 model in the USA, and give me high speed on China Mobile while in China? I could have bought the 1524 in Hong Kong, but didn’t want to have a phone that Apple wouldn’t service while in the USA, and take a chance it wouldn’t work with tmobile in the USA.
Thanks!

Good Day,
I currently live in Jakarta, Indonesia, I will be traveling to Australia in about a week, my intent is to buy an IPhone 6 while I’m there.
I heard that I may not be able to use LTE here, is this true?
Amongst the models mentioned above, is there one that will work for me? My intent is to buy a sim free phone and purchase a pay as you go sim here when I get back. Or better yet, is it possible for me to just transfer my existing sim right into my new phone? Pls advise.
As well, will the same phone work for when I go back to Canada in 3 years?
Thanks so much.
Steve

Hi
i have got iphone 6 gold from bahrain viva unlocked model no A1586, and my friend bought unlocked from open market model no A1549 black but my iphone’s more weight and width is bigger then other model, why there is difference? please.
Tony says
Apple yesterday started selling the A1586/A1524 models of the iPhone 6/6+ Unlocked, contract free and SIM free, in Apple stores and apple.com
These are the ‘world phone’ models that have extra LTE bands not found in the other models and, until yesterday, were only sold locked to Sprint in the US since September. These models will solve most of the concerns and issues expressed in the comments above, including, but not limited to, warranty issues for A1586/A1524 models bought unlocked overseas. The unlocked T-Mobile phones sold at apple.com do not have the extra LTE bands. Hope that helps US iPhone 6/6+buyers.

Apple currently sells two unlocked i phone 6 plus models in the U.S.: the A1522 and the A1524. I’m a T-Mobile user but also a world traveler. Which one is the better choice for me?
