Almost 3 months after the last update, Google has just updated PageRank once again earlier today. And before that was the update in August, it seems like Google is trying to come back to its update cycle of 3 months like it did in the past.
This is a very important update for webmasters and bloggers because it has happened at a sensitive time, after many websites (including mine) were affected by Google Panda’s changes such as the Google freshness algorithm or above the fold/page layout algorithm update. Specifically, the TechWalls’ traffic dropped by 50% after the updates and I struggled to reach milestones in 2011. This also led to a significant decrease in my monthly revenue from Adsense as well because the Adsense income is directly proportional to the traffic. However, my overall online earnings are still increasing consistently as I always try to diversify revenue sources. SocialSpark and Teliad made up the decreased revenue from Adsense and helped boost my earnings last month.
Gaining PR4, Easy or Difficult?
Back to the main topic, I was notified the new Google PR update earlier and that’s a major update. I have checked all of my websites and there have been some changes. Unfortunately, the TechWalls blog could not reach the new Pagerank this time, its PR still remains at PR3. Although this site didn’t make progress, I am still happy because at least Google did not degrade my site after recent algorithm update. Besides, this is also explainable as getting PR4 is much more difficult than gaining PR1, PR2 or Pr3. It requires serious link building strategies to reach PR4 whereas I could not invest much time and money to my blog in the last few months.
The quantity of backlinks is not an important factor to get higher PageRank. I read somewhere that to gain PR4, we will need 3055 backlinks from PR1 sites or 555 PR2 or 101 PR3 or 18 PR4 or 3 PR5 or 1 PR6/7/8/9/10. This is just a reference and I am not sure if it is true. I think it will also depend on the relevancy of those backlinks, the backlink could only be counted when the content is relevant. So the quality of backlinks is essential to increase PR and the best way to get high quality links is developing great content or products. For example, when you have a great post with unique idea or you give away a free WordPress theme, people will appreciate them and give credit to your content. Once again, Content is King. A few days ago, Emmanuel Banks, our awesome writer, had a blog post on Blogger’s Guide to Keywords and this has drawn some backlinks from high PR blogs, one of them is PR6. Therefore, if the above formula is true, I can expect TechWalls will get PR4 in the next update (probably in June!?).
I am not an expert in Google PageRank, so I do not know more ways to increase PR. If you have any experience in gaining high PR or ever own a PR4 website, please share with us below.

Well i can’t agree with you..Google doesn’t take the link count, Google will only count the relevant link(click-through links). I got my PR 3 in 2 months. But, still remains in PR3 after 1.5 years!!!!

Hi Tuan, I don’t think getting a backlink from a PR6 website would get you PR4. This is because the page source should be PR6, which means either you get a sitewide backlink from a PR6 website or the inner page from where you get the backlink should be PR6, which is very unlikely since most PR6 websites has PR3-PR4 inner pages.

There are many factors that affect pagerank, age is a big one, a site that is 10 years old with few backlinks can get a high pagerank. It’s not a guarantee but it is very likely that just by having 1 pagerank 8 backlink is enough to give you a pagerank

I noticed that my website also dropped from PR2 to PR1 during the last update. Is there any hope that I might regain my PR2 position soon enough?

I’ve had my site at PR4 for a long time. At some point before Panda it even reached PR5. At that time I had half of the content I have now. One thing was the major difference I believe: at that time my site was super fast because it was just a barebones WP site with just content and few images. Now the homepage is really heavy because of images, ads, fonts, etc… I will now try MaxCdn like you guys suggest and keep my fingers crossed!

Google Page Rank depends on backinks. In this manner more backlinks your website have then the page rank is more and it is affected by rank of the page linked to you. Secondly, age of the site is considered if your site has more age then it is more trusted and favorable to Google. A website with many incoming links, plenty of pages, and several internal links to other pages with the website then all these are well considered by Google.

Im not sure that the number of links required is correct. My site has over 5000 links, more than 40 PR3 links, some PR7 links and I still haven’t achieved not even a PR1.
A question, does the number of visitors you get to a site help increase pagerank?

Interesting article! Does anyone know when the next PR update of google will be in 2013?
Another aspect google looks at these days is beside the age of the site, the domain registration. If you register your domain for 10 years, you will be considered as more “serious”. Good to try woorank.com to analyze your site for free, it will be an eyeopener for many.

I had seen two websites two wen development company websites two years back (both made in Joomla) with PR 3, domain ages 5 yrs 3 months and 10 yrs 8 months. Last month I checked one of the website (domain age-5 yrs 3 months) and found PR 6. I have checked the other website the PR degraded to 2. The new things I found to the website with PR6 is that the website has been changed from Joomla to WordPress. They are continuously/gradually increasing the website content and DO NOT KNOW about their link building strategy. I am still striving for PR1.

Stop worrying about PR!!! I think it is wise to focus on building a great site which will provide helpful information people will want to link to. Once you write and share great content, people will naturally link to you and your PR will definitely improve! That is why most “big sites” like CNN, Mashable, etc do
