Vacuum cleaners have, in large part, remained consistent over the years in terms of their basic functionality: suction. The only indication that anything is actually being cleaned is the somewhat satisfying noise of dirt particles being sucked away into oblivion. Dyson’s newest addition to their line of cordless vacuums, the Gen5detect, takes vacuum technology to a new level, with power that is unparalleled in the industry.

Design & New Features
The Dyson Gen5detect vacuum cleaner maintains a similar form factor to its predecessors with some noticeable changes. A power button on the top of the LCD display has replaced the traditional trigger for powering the machine, so we no longer have to hold the trigger during operation. The Gen5detect also has a larger cylinder for the HEPA filter housing. The filter is washable, eliminating ongoing costs for replacement.
The soft roller inside the Fluffy Optic floor head is also washable and now features a brighter laser that is easier to see in daylight. A new button on the machine’s tube reveals an integrated crevice/dusting tool, converting the handstick to a handheld unit in seconds.
A standout feature is its LCD screen, which presents the number and size of particles being cleaned in real time. It offers a sense of accomplishment during cleaning sessions, making vacuuming an engaging, even enjoyable task. However, existing Dyson customers who own the previous model (V15 Detect) may find the upgrade somewhat lacking, as many of the features are similar, albeit with minor improvements.
The Green Beam and the De-Tangling Vanes
The Gen5detect isn’t just about raw power and real-time statistics. Dyson has also incorporated illumination technology into the vacuum. While other brands may include a standard white light to aid in visibility, the Gen5detect utilizes a green beam. This beam, which is most effective on hard surfaces, highlights dust that would otherwise be nearly invisible. This visibility enhancement is facilitated by the Fluffy Optic attachment, which is designed specifically for use on hard floors. Unfortunately, the head doesn’t work well on rugs or carpets; I use the Digital Motorbar cleaner head most of the time because it performs better on all surfaces.
Moreover, the Gen5detect offers a solution to one of the most annoying problems for vacuum users: hair entanglement. This Dyson model comes equipped with two heads that incorporate technology to combat this issue. The Digital Motorbar, which resembles a conventional vacuum head, contains 56 de-tangling vanes that guide hair into the dirt canister, minimizing hair entanglement in the brush. There is also a hair-screw tool that is useful for cleaning your car, mattress, couch, or other furniture. It is great to see the brush free from tangled hair; I’ve used the vacuum for over a month and never had to deal with that issue.
Cleaning Performance: Superbly Powerful
The Gen5detect is equipped with a new motor that offers up to 262 air watts of suction. This is the most powerful cordless vacuum Dyson has ever released. The motor spins at a remarkable 135,000 rpm, providing formidable suction power. The proof is in the results, as even larger debris are sucked up with ease. For many traditional vacuums, such an endeavor would typically result in a blockage, necessitating a time-consuming disassembly of the machine.
Despite the raw power of the Gen5detect, it doesn’t neglect the intricacies of vacuuming different surfaces. The vacuum can intelligently adjust the level of suction depending on the type of floor it encounters and the level of debris present. This adjustment happens instantaneously and works impeccably even when transitioning between high and low-traffic areas in a house. This automatic adjustment of power not only optimizes cleaning performance but also enhances the battery life by reducing unnecessary power expenditure.
Dyson claims the Gen5detect can capture particles as small as 0.1 microns, which is smaller than the 0.3 microns that the V15 Detect is said to capture.
I have used the Dyson as the primary vacuum in my house and it manages to remove almost all debris on hardwood, low carpet, and high carpet, beating the average cleaning performance across all vacuums I’ve ever used.
Room for Improvement
Despite its impressive features and capabilities, the Gen5detect isn’t without its flaws. One major drawback as mentioned earlier is that I almost do not use the laser cleaning head; It is a waste of money because many people buy this vacuum just for that feature. If you only need to clean hard floor, you might find it much more useful.
In addition, the additional weight from the integrated tools and larger battery pack makes the device top-heavy, potentially straining users’ arms. This is not a big problem when cleaning the floor, but you can feel the extra weight when the stick is detached for use in handheld mode. Specifically, the Gen5detect weighs 7.6 lbs as compared to Dyson V15 Detect’s 6.8 lbs.
Battery Life
Battery life is a crucial factor in cordless vacuums. The device now features a slimmer, longer battery pack which offers up to 70 minutes of runtime, which is an improvement from the 60-minute runtime of the previous three generations of V-series vacuums. Runtime can vary depending on the suction mode and level of dirt on the floor and the LCD screen provides real-time updates on the remaining battery life, allowing users to plan their cleaning accordingly. I only use the vacuum in Auto mode and the battery life ranges from 40-50 minutes.
Final Thoughts
Pros:
- The power button replacing the traditional trigger
- Improved battery life
- Includes an integrated crevice tool
- Quieter than older models
- Hair does not get stuck around the brush
- Strong suction power
Cons:
- Very pricey.
- Its top-heavy design makes it hard to use when in hand-held mode
- The laser cleaning head is not really useful
The Dyson Gen5detect is a product of impressive technological advancement and demonstrates the brand’s commitment to innovation. It offers powerful suction, intelligent adaptation to different cleaning scenarios, and engaging feedback to make cleaning a rewarding experience. Although it falls short in terms of ergonomics and affordability, the Gen5detect sets a high bar in the cordless vacuum market, and it will be interesting to see how competitors respond. If you can’t afford it, Dyson’s own V15 vacuum, while lacking some of the new model’s enhancements, offers a cheaper yet still competent option.
